From John Fwah
The Kaduna State Government has told journalists practicing in the state that its doors remain open to them, assuring that it would never clampdown on them or suppress them from carrying out their constitutional functions
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Nasir El-Rufai, on Media and Publicity, Mr. Samuel Aruwan gave the assurance on Sunday, when he visited the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna Council Secretariat to empathise with the members over the invasion by political thugs last Sunday during a press briefing.
“As far as the Kaduna State Government is concerned, there is no clampdown on the media in the state. The media are our partners and there is no time the state government decided to clampdown on media,” he stressed.
Aruwan said while referring to happenings in the state as they affect the media and other sectors, that the el-Rufai-led government is in a position to explain all the happenings in the state.
“The doors of the state government remains wide open to the leadership and members of NUJ. If you want clarification on anything we are always ready to explain,” he said.
On the attack, he frowned at the development, describing it as unfortunate.
“We will not watch journalists threatened by people who want to harass them. Kaduna State Government immediately ordered the Commissioner of Police to investigate the incidence and I explained he government insisted there’s need to investigate this matter get to the root.
” I empathise with journalists and entire leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists. It is my prayer that the unfortunate incident that happened last Sunday here should not happy again
” I would like to use this opportunity to appeal not just to journalists but to all citizens that nothing will deter the government from ensuring that all are protected,” he said.
In his remarks, Chairman NUJ Kaduna Council, Comrade Adamu Yusuf appealed to the state government to assist members who lost valuable possessions during the attack.
“Most of our members lost gadgets. Six handsets, five digital recorders were lost and a digintal video camera belonging to Liberty TV was destroyed,”
“We werebreally shocked because this is the first time in the history of  NUJ that political thugs will attack its secretariat where they are performing their constitutional responsibilities. In actual fact any journalists’ secretariat is an embassy where anybody can come and express his or her feelings, especially in this democratic dispensation.
> We thank you for finding time by issuing your statement on time and assured us that perpetrators would be brought to book as well as finding time for being with us at this sad moment . That press statement alone means a lot to the council. NUJ Kaduna does not belong to any political party. He said.
> It will be recalled that political thugs attacked the secretariat of the council and disrupted the press conference being addressed by some APC National Assembly members.
